A Journey through the sounds of U. Rajesh -'Into The Light'

When I first came across John McLaughlin’s Floating Point three years ago, I instantly fell in love with it. What I didn’t realize then, was that, apart from being one of McLaughlin’s most fantastic set of Indo-Jazz/ Fusion compositions, the album makes roads for a stream of young Indian musicians from both classical and western schools, and opens up new horizons in the world of Jazz and World Music.

One such less explored, yet extremely gifted musician I discovered out of the album was Mandolin player U Rajesh. Brother and disciple of Mandolin Maestro U Srinivas, (of legendary Remember Shakti fame) who revolutionized the instrument by mastering the Carnatic style of Gamakam even on a staccato instrument like Mandolin; Rajesh had a relatively subdued musical journey in his initial years. Over the years, Rajesh crafted himself into a brilliant musician, creating a unique percussive style in electric mandolin that has made a meaningful significance among the honest musicians across the world.

Besides playing with Mandolin Srinivas, Rajesh has performed extensively alongside musical greats like Vikku Vinayakaram, V.Selvaganesh, John McLaughlin, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ranjit Barot, Bikram Ghosh and Pete Lockett among many others across major Festivals around the world, including the prestigious International Mandolin Festival held at Rudolstadt, Germany organized by Tanz & Folk Festival.
Rajesh’s versatile musical creations include Carnatic albums like Coromandel Duet(with Vikku Vinayakram)- a much acclaimed work by crtitics around the world , a fascinating solo album Turning Point, a blissful Eternal Bliss (with U.Shrinivas), a mystical Mystic Raptures (with U.Shrinivas and V.Selvaganesh) ,a live concert Maestros Choice with U.Shrinivas and a soulful Monsoon Melodies(with Bikram Ghosh).Rajesh’s Jazz Fusion/World endeavors include albums like Into the light (with Anil Srinivasan), Grammy nominated Spirit (with Pete Lockett, Bikram Ghosh, John Gwasky, Anil Srinivasan, Keith Peters, Uma Shankar ) among others. He has also featured in many albums like Selva Ganesh’s Impressions, Pete Lockett's Journey with the Master Percussionists of India and of course, John McLaughlin’s Grammy nominated album Floating Point.
"...I was attracted to jazz as a kid. When I was about 13 I heard Shakti. My favourite was John ji. Vikku mama (ghatam exponent Vikku Vinayakram, part of Shakti) had given me the cassette. It was wonderful that John ji reviewed my album Turning Point." - U.Rajesh

"Once again a new star shines on the musical horizon. For many years Rajesh has been eclipsed by the brilliance of his elder brother the world renowned U. Srinivas. With this CD, we see the dawning of a young man who shines entirely with his own light. He has carved out yet another original style on the mandolin; and while we may enjoy the subtle influences of his elder brother and Venna Maestro (Late) S. Balachander, here is an artist whose mature personality sings loud and clear through his music. Marvellous!!"
-Mahavishnu John McLaughlin on U.Rajesh's Album Turning Point

Listen to Inside Out : John Mclaughlin/U.Rajesh,The Floating Point
His diverse endeavors and exceptional ability to flow melodiously across genres through the electronically treated strings of the mandolin, with the Gamakka that is inherent in his fingers, has earned him a lot of respect among the Classical and Jazz schools ,world over.
U Rajesh believes in creating music with a deeper philosophical meaning. Most of Rajesh’s compositions portray an ‘inclusive’ musical philosophy. The ease with which Rajesh adapts to Carnatic classical melodies and fuses them into an Indo-Western ambience is really fascinating.Rajesh is among the young, open and intelligent niche of Indian classical musicians who through their devotion and ingenuity can take their listeners into the light and thus, bear testimony to the fact, that a new, honest generation of music has dawned upon.

"Its a different story however ,that ,when I searched online about U. Rajesh and his complete discography , most of the links talked about his marraige with Meera Jasmine and well, almost nothing about his work/life.It surely was a musical shock. Sing would be grateful to the readers who choose to come forward and help us with more information about the artist's discography/work beyond the albums Sing mentioned in the above article"

A Phenomenon called 'Guitar Prasanna'

"A true world music visionary" - Bill Milkowski, Jazziz

"Prasanna is a living hope for quality music" - A.R. Rahman

Every Art form faces a certain threat of misuse-the threat of over exposure, distortion and identity loss. But like human beings, possibilities of new artistic beginnings can only be created through expanding horizons; for Art is essentially an expression of human mind.
Indian classical, with its rich tradition, strong legacy and orthodox edifice, for ages, has imprinted questions over experimentations among its practitioners and listeners.

The perceived threat of distortion that the orthodox school thought they faced, made it tougher for the genre to reach out to the people beyond East till 1950’s.

And then there was,'West Meets East’. A connection that not only took Indian classical beyond the confined scope of listeners and practitioners but also laid foundations for different musical forms around the world to enter into the minds of Indian musicians.

By late 60’s a stream of progressive Indian classical musicians rouse to create new styles and gharanas that contributed much of the experimental (Indo Jazz/free Indian Classical) Music scenario we have today.

The decade of 70’s saw birth of two angelic concepts Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti that changed the face of free Indian classical forever and imprinted the name of the musical genre ‘world fusion’

But even after six decades of intense, free, experimental, jazz, fusion and world music that progressive Indian classical artists have been associated with and have created sounds that were never heard before, those questions hover round somehow.

One such question was asked to a little boy, many years earlier, when he wanted to play Carnatic Classical in electric guitar.
Twenty years down the line, Prasanna Ramaswamy is not only counted among the best exponents of Carnatic Classical but also is equally honored by maestros world over for the unique sound that he has gifted to the world of Jazz.
Prasanna effortlessly plays ‘world’s most ancient musical forms on one of the world's most modern instruments’ and can flow between genres( Jazz, Blues, Rock and Classical music ) like water.

“Coltrane's A Love Supreme , Miles Davis' Bitches Brew , Weather Report's Black Market , Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame , Shakti's Natural Elements and, I suspect, Prasanna's Be The Change."

Prasanna's work that spreads across diverse musical forms has a common string which integrates them: his unique compositions, ambience and sound.Around a dozen Carnatic records till date, A carnatic/Rock tribute to Jimi Hendrix (Electric Ganesha Land), The landmark Album ‘Be The Change’ (featuring Victor Wooten and many other Grammy winning Jazz musicians),Electric solo album 'Peaceful', an album with original arrangements of Sai bhajans on guitar Echo-Saichan,The much talked about instructional DVD Ragamorphism ,music compositions for documentary films such as the2009 Oscar winner 'Smile Pinki’,music compositions for many national and international films, music arrangement and conduction of String Orchestra for (the title track in) Lagaan and many other film scores for A.R.Rahman and Illayaraja and for years. Discography

In 1993, when Prasanna, a Bachelor in Naval Architecture,( IIT Madras) decided to quit his software engineering job and live his passion by joining the Bachelor's degree course at Berklee College Of Music (Majoring in Classical Composition and Jazz Composition), A new era of Indian music was born.

The Musical Expeditionary and the scholar that he has been, made it easy for Prasanna to sense that in India, unlike the educational system (that is comparable to the best in the world), a dedicated music institute that is at par with top music schools around the world was surely missing.
The traditional Indian model of music learning benefited our classical artists, for ages, to receive music education from their gurus .But thousands of talented western musicians in India have had no place to go in India for a top quality music education and similarly there is no place where Indian classical artists could go in India to study contemporary western music at a high level.

Prasanna could feel the importance of a structured music revolution that was needed in India. And Prasanna,as daring as his sound, envisaged it's possibilities.

His answer was Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music (SAM).

Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music is the first ever professional academy of music in India to offer a series of programs in contemporary music that includes Rock, Jazz, Classical and World music. With Voice, Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums and Indian Percussion performance as its focus, SAM has started its first 6 month diploma certificate program in July 2010.
A Residential Contemporary Music Academy with sophisticated infrastructure & amenities and a faculty that includes Rubens De La Corte,Ed Degenaro ,Andro Biswane,David Anderson,Jovol ‘bam bam’ Bell,Atma Anur , Harvey Wirht,Sarah Jerrom,Natalie John,Manu Koch,Vardan Ovsepian,Steve Jenkins,Steve Zerlin and Dr S.Karthick, makes Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music a pinnacle among Indian and world music institutes -A place where musicians and teachers from varied genres/disciplines of music come together to create an influx of ideas and new musical endeavors .The philosophy of the school transcends beyond the typical notion of ‘East meets West’ and extends beyond cultural exchange to a process of cultural understanding, appreciation and gratification .Its uniquely designed integrated curriculum is targeted at taking musicianship up to a level that not only helps in becoming a better musician but also a better interpreter of your inner self as an artist. SAM would not only strengthen the already established Indian Classical teaching system but also add new directions with the diverse, multi genre, cross-cultural openness that internationally recognized Faculty /Musicians would bring in.

Prasanna’s SAM would open doors for musicians across the world to come learn Indian/Canatic music, Konokol and other grammar/mathematics of Indian classical, their usage in jazz and experimental fusion, in a truly Indian experience with a global insight. It would also help the music senerio, perceptions about free, experimental, music among the young Indian musicians and listeners in India
There’s an upsurge of an honest music and quality events.SAM has taken initiative and organized workshops across the country where Jazz mastreos like Victor Wooten, Rodney Holmes, Mike Pope, David Gilmor have come to India.

Prasanna is surely one of the cornerstones in this quality revolution of Indian music. His envision of SAM has realized beautifully and it promises to contribute to a meaningful expansion of Indian music academia and research, thereby increasing quality musicians, serious students, noteworthy listeners and music scholars.

With people like Prasanna around ,we listeners have a hope that both traditional and progressive Indian classical Schools can move ahead hand in hand and keep their respective forte' intact.

Sing regrets the demise of Dr. Randall Douglas Giles,Dean Swarnabhoomi Academy of Muisc. His work in music research, academics and education ,his devotions towards teaching and his love for humanity with forever be treasured.
